thigsAsk anyone which exercise builds the thighs muscles best and they will tell you it is the squat.  Yes, squats are called the ‘Daddy of all exercises”.  Not only do the squats build the thighs, butt and lower back, but also a great way of staying in shape as well as it burns up a lot of energy and keeps your metabolism revved up.  But then, when it comes to building just the thighs, butt and nothing more, there may be other exercises which equal the squat in good measure and yes, some are much safer too.  Lunges is one such exercise that builds the thighs and butt, but does not, in any way, bring with it any injuries that can happen to someone who does heavy squats. eye

Your eyes are the windows to your heart and yet, you never take it to heart that eyes have to be cared for, as befits a very delicate and sensitive organ of the body.  Hardly a day goes by without us doing something that irritates or even compromises on the health of this very special sensory organ of the body.  We rub our eyes hard, never bother to wash our eyes clean, do not think it is necessary to give your eyes some rest, take it for granted that the eyes will stay put however much you hurt them and yes, neglect them in a way we do our wives.

In fact, it does not take too much of your time or money to take good care of your eyes.  Here are a few ways you can help your eyes to do a better job for you. Continue Reading →

I remember this famous saying which goes like this, “We see, but do not look; we hear, but do not listen”.  I did not understand or grasp the entire meaning of this statement until one of my friends asked me to listen to his music composition and give a critical opinion.   He knew that I was wont to give a favourable opinion and pre-empted me from doing so by this suggestion.  Afterwards I said to him, “ The music and the lines seem very ordinary, but it felt like it came straight from your heart”.  My friend hugged me and said, “It did, but how did you know?”  And I found myself saying, “Because I listened to it”.  He looked a bit baffled by the answer.  Continue Reading →

THE DEADLY SUGAR

It is very normal to call your loved ones ‘sugar’, but I am sure, a time will come when the term will be as repugnant and undesirable as what that very object does to your body.  Yes, refined sugar is a deadly poison, which robs you off some of your physical and mental abilities, dries up your zest and enthusiasm by making you lethargic, makes you into a despicable bundle of lard and fat and torments your entire body with diseases such as diabetes before eventually killing you.   Continue Reading →

The Thing About Abdominal Exercises….

It never ceases to amaze me that people are so gullible and easily fall prey to exploitation.  How else could you explain away all the advertisements that insult your intelligence?  It is not as though there is no vestige of truth in the content; if it did not, the promoters of the ads could be sued and made liable.  It is the total inability of the public to see through the projected picture or the reluctance to question anything that teases and taunts their intellectual taxidermy that is so disconcerting. Or should I ask you “what does exercise do for you”?.   I guess they sound very much the same, but in reality one is as different from the other as a cricket ball is from a foot ball.   Everyone knows that exercise keeps you fit and healthy.   Well, that is something exercise does for you,  Continue Reading →

What is the first thought that comes to your mind when you look at a competitive swimmer, poised to jump in and slice through water with precise and seemingly effortless strokes of his hands?  “What a great, sexy looking physique?” is what that crossed your mind, right?  And yet, swimming can also make you fat.  Yes, that is what I said.  Swimming is one of the few exercises other than weight training that hits almost all the muscles and is one of the best exercise for the body.  Yet, you could be making a big mistake if you jump into the pool hoping to reduce your body weight and fat levels. PCOD or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome has now come to be very common and lot of cause for concern among young women between the age of 20 and 30.  Medical science is still not very clear about what causes the hormonal changes that has come to be termed as PCOD.  This is condition where there is an imbalance of women’s sex hormones such as the estrogen, progesterone and also the male hormones such as androgen.  Women also have some male hormone in their body as men do some female hormones.  Though it is not entirely classified as a genetic disorder, it is common to see mother and daughters suffering from PCOD.  I was having a coffee at Café Magnet when this young lad walked up and asked me if I owned a Belair Health Club.  “I am Regi’s (not real name) friend.  Did he talk to you about me?”  Yes, he had.   This boy needed counseling on how to build up a little more confidence, but wouldn’t come to the gym to get started.  He wished to know if there was anything he could do at home that would transform his self.  It seemed a bit odd that he should choose me to give him lessons on this subject, but I thought I would find out what the boy’s problem was and refer him to a psychologist, if he so needed it.
